Our Story

Close-up of light pink and white magnolia flowers on a branch, with a blurred dark green leafy background.

We started Magnolia Voice and Swallowing Specialists to bring expert speech, voice, and swallowing therapy directly to the Milwaukee community in a private, relaxed setting.

It's rare for clinicians with our training to offer private services. We wanted to build a place where patients get direct access to specialized care when you need it and with the flexibility to support you well beyond your first set of goals.

Our Values

Provide current evidence-based practice

Treat every patient with respect and honesty

Form real connections with our patients

Clinical Fellowship in Voice and Swallowing Disorders, Emory Voice Center

Voice, swallowing, and upper airway disorders have been the focus of my entire career, and I've had the privilege of doing that work inside some of the country's leading academic voice centers. After my clinical fellowship in voice and swallowing disorders at Emory Voice Center, I became a faculty member at the Center for Voice and Swallowing at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. My caseload in New York City typically included a significant number of voice professionals, including Emmy- and Oscar-winning actors and performers, Metropolitan Opera singers, Broadway and Off-Broadway performers, recording artists, and fitness instructors. When the COVID-19 pandemic prompted my move away from New York, I brought that same training and expertise to patients at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

I started Magnolia Voice and Swallowing Specialists because I wanted patients to have direct and easy access to specialized therapy in a comfortable, relaxed setting, closer to home.

When I work with patients, my first task is getting to know them and their concerns. I strive to form a strong connection with my patients so they feel seen, heard, and unconditionally supported. The benefit of private practice is having the space to really listen, take our time, and provide answers to your questions. I also champion a multi-disciplinary treatment approach and will always collaborate with other professionals and healthcare providers. I act as an advocate for my patients and communicate often and openly with their medical team so patient care stays coordinated every step of the way.

Outside of work, I love to move my body, whether it be through dancing like a goofball, playing tennis poorly, rock climbing, golfing, skiing, or simply walking. I like to do all of these things with my family, being silly and finding the joy in every day with my two beautiful daughters, my very calm husband, my dog Ruthie, and my farm cat Squish.

I still perform as much as I can, having sung with Cor Cantiamo, the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, the New York Choral Society, and most recently the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus.

Meet McKenzie

McKenzie Klein, MS, CCC-SLP
Co-Owner, Speech-Language Pathologist

McKenzie Klein, MS, CCC-SLP, owner, swallowing therapist, and speech therapist at Magnolia Voice & Swallowing Specialists in Milwaukee, WI

Specialties:

Articulation therapy, voice therapy, swallowing therapy, facial retraining therapy, manual therapy

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2017

Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2019

I have been practicing as a speech-language pathologist since 2019. I began my career in Delaware specializing in voice and swallowing disorders at Bayhealth Medical Center. There, I split my time between outpatient and acute care settings. In outpatient, I focused on voice, cough, breathing, and swallowing therapy; In acute care, I treated swallowing, speech, and cognitive deficits caused by many medical reasons. In 2022, I moved back home to Wisconsin and continued refining my specialties in voice and swallowing therapy at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Along the way, I developed a passion for integrating manual therapy techniques into voice and swallowing therapy. That work, paired with additional training in lymphedema management, led me to specialize in hands-on treatment for head and neck cancer patients, helping them eat, talk, and swallow more comfortably. I also discovered a passion for neuromuscular facial retraining, helping patients recovering from facial paralysis regain the ability to smile, speak, and connect with the people around them.

Swallowing therapy also holds a special place for me, especially working with patients who have felt "stuck" in their healing process. I've been honored to help patients who spent months relying on a feeding tube be able to enjoy snacks and meals by mouth again.

As a speech therapist, I get to know my patients' goals, interests, and daily lives so therapy stays functional and relevant. Seeing patients at Magnolia Voice and Swallowing Specialists also gives me the flexibility to offer ongoing maintenance care once goals are met, so patients can keep the progress they've worked hard for.

Outside of work, I love traveling with my partner, Kyle, playing board games, weightlifting, and spending time with my cat, Lucy. I'm also learning the ropes of homeownership and gardening after recently buying my first house.
